When people try to quit smoking cigarettes, they often need something to take the place of cigarettes, to be a substitute for them. Think of nicotine patches, for example. When the smoker quits using cigarettes, they put the patch on an arm in order to slowly decrease their body’s addiction to the substance. Now there is a new substitute, not a patch, but a metal tube that looks and works like a cigarette but that is not a real cigarette.
Electronic cigarettes, otherwise known as e-cigarettes, or an electronic cigarette or smokeless cigarettes, do not depend on tar, tobacco or many other chemicals for their effect. They are battery-powered, and work by creating a water vapor that can be flavored or unflavored and that is inhaled by the smoker in much the same way that he or she would inhale the smoke of an ordinary cigarette. The electronic cigarette is thus designed to make the smoker look and feel as though he or she is actually smoking. The gesture of bringing the metal cigarette to one’s mouth does not change, and neither does the feeling of inhaling smoke, or in this case vapor, into one’s mouth. But the effect is different because, in the case of the electric cigarette, the consequences for one’s health might be different.
The health industry and government health officials have not yet conclusively found that these smokeless cigarettes are a good alternative to the smoking of actual cigarettes. While some people say that the lack of tar and other additives make the smokeless cigarettes an obvious choice for those who are trying to quit real cigarettes, and who are trying to benefit their heath, other people aren’t sure. There are ongoing studies regarding the health effects of nicotine vapor, which is in electronic cigarettes. Whether it is inhaled directly or second-hand, it will have an effect. What precisely that effect is, in the long-term, is not ye known.
There are now many different styles of smokeless cigarettes. Most are modeled to look like actual cigarettes or cigars, but others look like ballpoint pens, even screwdrivers, because these latter items can easily house the mechanisms involved in processing and delivering the nicotine vapor. There are kinds of smokeless cigarettes that are disposable and kinds that are reusable. The reusable kinds are battery powered. They come with a kit that contains a charger. This charger might be a USB module that can connect to your computer. You tether the cigarette to the USB module, and connect the module to the computer. Then you wait for the smokeless cigarette’s battery to be recharged.
People are wondering whether smokeless cigarettes will catch on with smokers who want to quit real cigarettes, and whether they will be allowed in public places where smoking used to be allowed, but now is banned. Take restaurants, for example. If someone is smoking a smokeless cigarette that doesn’t have much odor, and that doesn’t emit the usual second-hand smoke, should that person be allowed to continue smoking it in a restaurant or a bar?
